Clive Stafford Smith

Clive Stafford Smith is the founder and Director of legal action charity Reprieve which campaigns against the death penalty worldwide. Clive spent 26 years working as an attorney in the Southern United States where he represented over 300 prisoners facing the death penalty, none of whom could afford a lawyer. He prevented the death penalty in all but six cases and has taken five cases to the US Supreme Court, all successfully. Clive has also helped secure the release of 65 prisoners from Guantánamo Bay and currently represents 10 more – including the last British resident of Guantánamo, Shaker Aamer. Alongside many other awards Clive has received an OBE for ‘humanitarian services’ in 2000; the Gandhi Peace Award in 2005; and the Contrarian Prize in 2014. He lives in Dorset.
